I am Mr. 42 (Yes, I changed my name in 1998.)
I love photography. I love collecting. And, most importantly, I love building and running this site so that the world can be
made a better place by allowing you to share your wonderful self with others.
I've been spending most of my free time since January 2005 developing Know?list!.
Am I obsessive? Am I crazy? Am I insane?
Feel free to share your thoughts on those questions and any others you have in one of the many forums
on this site.
Did you know that at this time I've taken 4971 pictures of objects for the site.
Want to help me out? Given your good looks and high intelligence I imagine you have a burning desire to
do just that.
If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area then I'd be happy to drop by and take
pictures of your collections!

New Features Release March 18, 2006
Check out my new Soogle service! It takes the effort out of pointless lawsuits.
I've added some wiki capabilities. Every object can now have a wiki name. You can make wiki links to wiki pages by entering text like [[wiki page name]] into forum posts and object descriptions and other wiki pages. You can also click on the "Create Wiki Page" link in the "Contribute" navigation box on the left side of the page.
I've created some new web ...

New Features Release Feb 21, 2006
The search engine for the site has now been changed to use Lucene. This means that the site has a much richer search capability now. Boolean, field, and nearness searches are all there.
The tags are now true tags in that they search for only those things with the same tag.
I've written a new forum system from the ground up. It took a week of hard work but it was worth it. Now I have threaded forums like slashdot does instead of the simple boring flat forums I had.
The new ...

Holy part 1 batman!
This story was exciting, but it cries out for a part 2. But, it doesn't appear to be part of a serial. Is that just because the author didn't have the second part done in time for the next issue?
We're left with some important questions. Who hired the thugs that first attempted to capture Chad at the hotel and then tried to subdue him and the reporter in the gun fight? It was apparently a foreign nation, but it doesn't really make sense that any nation would go after that guy specifically ...

a bit flimsy
This story is a bit flimsy in my opinion. It starts out with an alien officer making the mistake of ignoring some approaching humans in vehicle. The vehicle was described by the alien as "one of the natives' mechanical geese". It has a wings and a whirling tractor screw at its forward end. The best I can come up with is that this is a helicopter with some sort of digging device on the front.
The aliens apparently look exactly like humans as a result of convergent evolution. Internally they ...
What Supports Apollo?
This is a fantastic look at the Brobdingnagian proportions of the hardware required to launch Apollo astronauts into space. It's a fantastic look at the scale of the rockets and the buildings that house them and the fuel used. Even after so many years it still boggles the mind.
For instance, the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) was (and perhaps still is, if it still exists) the world's largest structure. It's large enough that you could play two football games on the ground. If you added ...
December 2007 Analog
Hi all,
I do not see a thread for this issue (December 2007), so I shall deposit all my comments here. (If Geoff wishes to distribute them later, by story, that is fine with me.)
"Icarus Beach." A very human situation, almost an Action Romance of a tale -- in the least hospitable, and very science fictional, environment imaginable. Their dire personal situations could've taken place in some Emperor's court. Reminded me of James Clavell's Shogun, in that respect.
Just one question, ...
terrorists are not nice people
I liked the story, but it was somewhat unsatisfying in some ways.
For one, I am skeptical that a reasonably smart bad guy would tape up someone's hands and then put them near something sharp that they could use to cut their bonds. If there's a bad guy manual, the section on tying someone up would have a whole page describing how the victim should be kept away from sharp stuff.
Secondly, I had a difficult time buying that the spray-on video screen (on the balloon) was capable of emitting ...
a story that fit the times
This story is clearly a product of its times.
The initial setup is that some con men have escaped prison in a space ship and need to make a big hit so they have some money to start a new life.
One of them had overheard that a nearby planet had something so important on it that no one was allowed to land on it. He didn't know what it was, but it was definitely a big deal.
They land and find that their ship has problems such that they cannot take off again for a few days. This is a ...
can't review it
Sadly I can't review this story because I didn't read it. It is part 2 in a 3 part series and I don't have the December 1969 issue so I can't read part 1 yet.
